Chennai Super Kings (CSK) became one of the first sides to bow out of the IPL 2025 playoffs contention. With just three wins and nine defeats from 12 matches, the five-time champions are currently placed at the bottom of the 10-team standings.
MS Dhoni, who was re-appointed as CSK captain midway into the IPL 2025 season following the injury of Ruturaj Gaikwad, is yet to bring his ‘A Game’ with the bat this year. In 12 innings, the cricketer has notched up 180 runs at an average of 25.71, and at a strike rate of 140.62, significantly lower in comparison to his last year’s strike rate of 220.54.
Joginder Sharma urges MS Dhoni to retire
Joginder Sharma, MS Dhoni’s T20 World Cup winning teammate from 2007, has urged the legendary wicketkeeper-batter to consider retirement from IPL. Sharma, who is now a DSP with Haryana Police, also added that if Dhoni wants to continue playing, he should play to prove his fitness. While speaking with ANI, Joginder Sharma said:
“He should play to prove his fitness, but I believe it’s time for him to rest.”
MS Dhoni has managed to aggregate just 180 runs from 12 innings of the IPL 2025 season at a measly average of 25.71. The 43-year-old has also lowered his position down the order on several occasions this year.
Dhoni did unleash a match-winning knock of 26* runs from just 11 balls against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) on April 14 in Lucknow.
Under his leadership, the CSK franchise will now face Rajasthan Royals in match 62 of the IPL 2025 season on Tuesday, May 20. The match will be hosted by the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi.
