On Tuesday, June 24, India suffered a five-wicket defeat against England, trailing the five-match Test series 0-1. It was a heartbreak for the Shubman Gill-led side, as the visitors had been ahead in the game and stood a chance to win the match.
All eyes were on Jasprit Bumrah to weave his magic in the second innings, but the star seamer went wicketless and finished with figures of 0/57 in his 19 overs. Interestingly, England chased down the target in 82 overs, while Bumrah bowled his last spell in the 65th over of the match.
Gill Breaks Silence On Bumrah's Injury Concerns
Fans were concerned and surprised not to see Bumrah return to bowl. Speculation arose about his fitness, with many believing the India star might have injured himself. In the latest developments, captain Shubman Gill has addressed the matter, revealing why he did not turn to the 31-year-old in the final stages of the game.
“No, he’s completely fit. Nothing like that. They were 15 or 20 runs away, so we just wanted to give the ball to some other bowlers, but he is definitely fit,” Gill told the BBC after the match.
Shubman Gill Sheds Light on Bumrah’s Availability
It was made clear before the start of the series that Jasprit Bumrah would not play all five Test matches. Fans are now awaiting news on whether the 31-year-old will be available for the second match.
Gill updated fans, remarking that there is an eight-day break and a decision will be made after that.
“It’s definitely match-by-match. We’ve got a good break after this match. Once we go to Birmingham and see the wicket, we will see if he’s going to play that one or not,” said Gill.
India will next lock horns against England in the 2nd Test of the series on July 2 in Birmingham.
