Day 3 of the New Year’s Test between South Africa and Pakistan saw a fiery confrontation between Babar Azam and Wiaan Mulder at Newlands, Cape Town on January 5, 2025. The drama unfolded during the 32nd over of Pakistan's second innings, which followed the enforcement of a follow-on by the South African team.

What Happened Between Babar Azam And Mulder?

Babar Azam, having played a controlled drive back to Mulder, was caught off-guard when the South African bowler, in his follow-through, aggressively threw the ball at him. The ball struck Babar on the pads, an unnecessary act that did not go unnoticed.

The former captain was clearly frustrated by the throw, and reacted by stepping out of his crease. The situation escalated when the Kyle Verreynne tried to capitalise on Babar’s movement, attempted a cheeky run-out. However, the attempt was unsuccessful, but it added fuel to the fire of the heated exchange.

Babar Azam's Diplomatic Reply

Speaking about the incident in the post-match conference, Babar Azam addressed the confrontation-“It was just the heat of the moment. These things happen in cricket, and we move on. It’s all part of the game.” Babar said with a smile.

It is important to mention that Babar Azam has made a remarkable start to the new year after a challenging year in 2024. The former Pakistan captain has displayed excellent resilience and composure in the ongoing Test against South Africa, as he made two consecutive half-centuries.

He faced mounting criticism for his lack of big scores in the previous year but has hit back with a series of impressive performances, and it would not be wrong to say that Pakistan will want Babar Azam to continue with his good form ahead of the upcoming Champions Trophy 2025
