India’s hopes of securing a place in the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) 2023-25 final came to a crushing end on Sunday, January 5, after Australia defeated India in the fifth and final Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT). Despite needing nothing less than a victory in Sydney to stay in contention for a third consecutive WTC final, India’s loss ended their campaign in this edition of the competition.
India’s journey in the third edition of the World Test Championship began in July 2023 with 1-0 series victory over the West Indies, followed by a 1-1 draw in South Africa in December 2023-January 2024. However, after this India's performance saw a significant rise in the home series, where they defeated both England and Bangladesh in dominant 4-1 and 2-0 victories, respectively.
However, the turning point came in October-November 2024, when India suffered a shocking 3-0 whitewash to New Zealand at home.
