Australian opener Usman Khawaja seems to be smitten by the recent fireworks of India’s rising star Yashasvi Jaiswal. The young Indian opening batter ended up as his team’s highest run-maker from the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy Test series.
Moreover, Jaiswal also ended the five-match series as its second highest run-aggregator overall after Travis Head. In spite of his latest string of prolific scores, Team India lost the series by a 1-3 margin to concede a Border-Gavaskar Test title for the first time in over a decade.
Usman Khawaja expresses admiration for Jaiswal
A day after India’s SCG humiliation to cap the series with a 1-3 defeat, Yashasvi Jaiswal took to his Instagram account and shared the experiences he learned from his maiden Test trip in Australia. The 23-year-old acknowledged his fans for their support, and vowed to make a stronger comeback for his next Test assignment.
Notably, Yashasvi Jaiswal’s social media post also caught the attention of Australia’s ageing veteran and opening batter Usman Khawaja. The 38-year-old took to the comments section and expressed his admiration for Jaiswal by writing:
“Love your work brother.”
While Yashasvi Jaiswal plundered 391 runs from five Tests at a prolific average of 43.44 with a match-winning century and two additional 80-plus scores, Usman Khawaja struggled to get going as the Australian opener managed to haul just 184 runs from his 10 innings at a meagre average of 20.44. Khawaja was primarily troubled by ‘Player of the Series’ Jasprit Bumrah, considering the legendary Indian speedster dismissed him six times in nine innings at an average of just 5.50.
Nonetheless, Australia won the five-match Border-Gavaskar Trophy Test series by a 3-1 margin after winning the SCG affair by six wickets.
Team India, on the other hand, conceded a Border-Gavaskar Trophy title for the first time since January 2015, and also lost a place in the WTC 2025 finals in the process.
