Afghanistan’s dream run in the T20 World Cup 2024 concluded with a shambolic loss to South Africa in the first semi-final at Brian Lara Stadium, Tarouba, on Thursday. Following this loss, captain Rashid Khan shared a heartfelt message with Afghanistan's fans and supporters.

Afghanistan suffered a heavy defeat at the hands of South Africa, being dismissed for just 56 runs, the lowest score ever recorded in a T20 World Cup semi-final.

On a lively and challenging pitch, South Africa's pace attack dominated. Marco Jansen (3-16), Kagiso Rabada (2-14), and Anrich Nortje (2-7) collectively claimed seven wickets. Tabraiz Shamsi contributed by taking three lower-order wickets, bringing a swift end to Afghanistan's innings.

In the run-chase, South Africa lost their opener Quinton de Kock early, still they managed to chase down the target with ease, securing a nine-wicket victory with 67 balls to spare.

Despite the disappointing defeat, Rashid was proud of his team's overall performance throughout the tournament. He shared a heartfelt message of thanks to the fans on his social media handles.

Afghanistan may have been overwhelmed by the occasion, with emotionally exhausting victories over New Zealand, Australia and Bangladesh taking a toll in the biggest match of their cricketing history. While they had an off-day, their achievements in this T20 World Cup remain commendable.

This setback does not diminish what they have accomplished in the tournament, and they should hold their heads high. Although it was a heartbreaking end, Afghanistan’s journey in this tournament has been nothing short of remarkable.
