Pakistan recently suffered an embarrassing ODI defeat as the West Indies bowled them out for 92 runs, securing a massive 202-run victory in the final game of the three-match series. Led by Mohammad Rizwan, Pakistan miserably failed while chasing 294, with Jayden Seales running through their lineup with a clinical six-wicket haul.
Umar Gul Explains What Led To Pakistan's Defeat In West Indies
This was the first time in 34 years that the West Indies outclassed Pakistan in an ODI series. After the series concluded, former fast bowler Umar Gul assessed Pakistan's performance, citing several valid reasons behind their downfall.
There was a time when Pakistan had world-class all-rounders like Shahid Afridi, Abdul Razzaq and Azhar Mahmood. These players could play match-winning knocks as well as bag crucial wickets in pressure situations.
Gul pointed out the lack of such all-rounders as a primary reason behind Pakistan's abysmal ODI performance in the Caribbean.
"There is a big difference between this team and the ones we had before. Back then, our all-rounders were established and that's why we dominated. Those all-rounders dominated in every department. Today, our batting is not firing and our bowlers are not taking wickets," Gul was quoted as saying by Cricket Pakistan.
Gul, who was Pakistan's highest wicket-taker in their triumphant 2009 T20 World Cup campaign, also questioned Mohammad Rizwan's captaincy, highlighting his failure to utilise the all-rounders in the ODI series.
"In the last two matches, we had two all-rounders in the team, but the captain didn't use them. That is also one of the reasons for Pakistan's failure," he added.
After suffering a 2-1 defeat in the West Indies ODIs, Pakistan are gearing up for the Asia Cup, where they will face arch-rivals India on September 14. Ahead of the marquee tournament, the Men in Green will face Afghanistan and the UAE in a triangular series.
