Veteran all-rounder Marcus Stoinis has revealed that he's still available to represent Australia in the upcoming T20 World Cup in India. Notably, despite bidding adieu to ODI cricket, Stoinis remains an active cricketer in the shortest format.
Marcus Stoinis Reveals His Conversation With Andrew McDonald
Recently, Marcus Stoinis was sidelined from Australia's T20I plans when the 2021 edition winners announced their squads for the crucial assignments against West Indies and South Africa. Promising all-rounder Mitchell Owen formally replaced the explosive batter in the Australian middle order.
However, Stoinis opened up on his honest conversation with head coach Andrew McDonald, which he had before his departure for The Hundred 2025. The 35-year-old cricketer stated that he opted to participate in the famed English competition after consulting with McDonald to prepare for a potential recall for next year's World Cup.
"The nature of it is that you can't select yourself in an Australian jersey, but you can sign a contract to come and play in the Hundred. When this opportunity came up, I spoke to Cricket Australia, I spoke to Ron [McDonald] and we made a plan around that, really, When you're planning it in advance, that makes it easier," Stoinis was quoted as saying by ESPNCricinfo.
Cricket Australia's selection committee chairman George Bailey also confirmed that Stoinis would be in the reckoning for the marquee tournament despite carrying a freelancer's contract, according to the ESPNCricinfo report.
"We are very lucky. We do it very well in Australia. The relationships that I've got with both Ron and Bails means you just have those conversations pretty openly," Stoinis added.
Stoinis has played 74 T20 Internationals for Australia, amassing 1245 runs at an average of 31.9 and a blistering strike rate of 148.6. However, with Australia aiming to revamp their core, the middle-order batter made way for the likes of Owen and Green, who recently performed admirably in the Caribbean.
