The Chennai Super Kings (CSK) had a forgettable IPL 2025 season, as the Yellow Army finished at the last spot and had several injury issues that derailed their campaign. However, the franchise had one bright spot in the form of Dewald Brevis, their mid-season signing. The South African came in as an injury replacement player, and made an instant impact.

Ashwin reveals the IPL loophole which CSK exploited

He slammed 225 runs in six matches, with a strike rate of 180, thus creating a major impact for his side. However, with Brevis now in demand after a scintillating century against Australia, CSK star, R Ashwin has made an explosive remark and revealed how the franchise exploited a loophole to buy him.

In a video on his YouTube channel, Ashwin revealed that CSK paid extra money over Brevis' base price to buy the Proteas star. Also, the Yellow side paid money to his agent, since the cricketer was in high demand.

"I will tell you something. About Brevis. He had a great time last IPL with CSK. In fact, a few teams were talking to him. A few teams left him because of the price. When he was supposed to be signed as a replacement, he was supposed to be signed at the base price. But what happens is you talk to the agents and the player will say, if you give me X amount extra, I will come," CSK spinner revealed.

R Ashwin also mentioned that the reason Brevis asked for a better amount is because he knew if he was released in the mega auction next year, he would have fetched a better amount.

Did CSK break the IPL signing rule?

Brevis came as a replacement for Gurjapneet Singh, and as per the IPL rules, when a team buys an injury replacement player, then the team should buy the player for a price that should not exceed the amount paid to the original player, in this case, Gurjapneet Singh.

Brevis was bought for the exact same price as Gurjapneet, and hence, CSK did not break any rules.
