Former England fast bowler Stuart Broad has refused to backtrack on his controversial comment about Australia, even after England losing the Ashes 2025-26 in just 11 days.
Broad, who had labelled this Australian team as the “worst since 2010” before the series, says he has no regrets despite the hosts racing to an unassailable 3-0 lead.
Stuart Broad throws shade at Australia despite England’s Ashes thrashing
England arrived in Australia full of confidence, hoping to finally end their long Ashes drought Down Under. The conditions seemed favourable too.
Australia were missing key players at different stages, with Pat Cummins absent for the first two Tests, Josh Hazlewood ruled out due of the entire series to injury, and Steve Smith missing the third Test in Adelaide.
Yet, none of that helped England, who were outplayed in all three matches. Since Australia sealed the series, former English pacer Stuart Broad has faced heavy criticism and online trolling for his remarks.
Australian batters Marnus Labuschagne and Travis Head even poked fun at his comments after the Adelaide Test. Still, Broad has stood firm, insisting that his opinion has not changed.
“Do I regret saying that? No. I did say Australia would have to play very badly [to lose the Ashes] and England would have to play very well. Australia haven’t played very badly and England haven’t played very well. I had Australia down as favourites, but I didn’t have them down as 3-0 favourites," Broad said on 'For The Love of Cricket' podcast.
He said he never claimed Australia were weak enough to be easily beaten. Stuart Broad explained that England would have needed to play at their absolute best while Australia would have had to play poorly for the series to be close. According to him, neither happened.
"There are a lot of things that have gone England’s way [in terms of injury and illness suffered by Australian players]. England haven’t been good enough ultimately. Australia have been relentless in what they’ve done. They’ve showed age is just a number,"Stuart Broad added.
Broad says the quality of Australian players in past was better
Amid heavy bashing, Stuart Broad maintained that, man for man, this Australian side does not match the quality of the past teams.
He pointed to the 2013-14 Ashes side led by Michael Clarke, which featured Mitchell Johnson at his devastating best, was a much stronger outfit.
“Do I think the [Australian] side of 2013-14 man for man was a better side? Yes, probably still. I don’t think individually they are better than any other team since 2010-11, but they’ve been relentless in the pressure they’ve managed to put on England, as have every Australian team since 2010. England losing 3-0 by the third Test is not something new. I don’t disagree with my comment. England have been at 20 per cent of their ability."
He stressed that losing 3-0 by the third Test in Australia is not new for England and that their biggest failure has been their inability to execute under pressure.
