Rohit Sharma has finally spoken about his future in the ODI format, and he has stated clearly that he is not done yet. The 38-year-old Indian batter, currently ranked No. 1 in ICC ODI rankings, has sent a strong signal that retirement is not on his mind anytime soon.

Rohit enjoyed a remarkable 2025 season in the 50-over format. He played all 14 ODIs for India during the year and scored 650 runs, including two centuries and four half-centuries.

His best phase came during India’s tour of Australia in October, where he finished as the leading run-scorer and won the Player of the Series award.

That series also helped Rohit Sharma reach the No. 1 spot in the ICC ODI batting rankings for the first time in his career.

This turnaround was especially significant because, before the Australia series, questions were being raised about Rohit’s future.

He had been removed from India’s ODI captaincy despite leading the team to the Champions Trophy title in his previous assignment.

Many believed that the Australia tour could decide how long his international career would last. Rohit responded in the best possible way, which is with runs.

Meanwhile, speaking at an event in Gurugram recently, Rohit Sharma opened up about his journey and used a powerful metaphor to explain his mindset.

He said his early life and career were difficult, but once he found momentum, everything changed. Comparing his career to a plane that has reached a high altitude, Rohit said he does not want that plane to land anytime soon.

“Mera bhi life kuch aise he tha; start karna bahut difficult tha. But once I took the momentum, once I sat in the plane, vo plane ne jo altitude pakda hai vo abhi tak neeche nahi aaya hai. I think that is what matters, and I don’t want that plane to land so quickly now. Mere ko abhi tak upar rehna hai," Rohit said.

With a three-match ODI series against New Zealand coming up and domestic action in the Vijay Hazare Trophy next, Rohit Sharma seems fully focused on extending his ODI journey.

Rohit-Kohli working hard to stay relevant

Both Rohit and Virat Kohli are committed to playing the 2027 ODI World Cup despite being in their late 30s. For Sharma, the focus extends beyond the field, as he is working hard in the gym to stay physically fit.

Before the Australia series comeback, Rohit Sharma shed over 10 kilos of weight, and the results were imminent.
