James Anderson concluded his illustrious Test cricket career at Lord's Cricket Ground, as England beat West Indies by an innings and 114 runs. In his final match, Anderson claimed 4 wickets — one in the first innings and three in the second.
He almost wrapped up his career with a final wicket but dropped an easy return catch. With West Indies down to their last wicket, Motie mishit an in-swinger from Anderson, which went straight to him, but he failed to hold onto it.
Regardless, Anderson's remarkable career stats stand at 704 wickets from 188 matches, including 32 five-wicket hauls and 3 ten-wicket matches.
Anderson on the dropped catch in final match
Jimmy Anderson reflected on the dropped catch and shared his feelings about concluding his long career. He acknowledged the disappointment of missing the chance but emphasized gratitude for the journey he had in cricket.
Anderson also expressed pride in his achievements and the memories created throughout his career.
"I'm still gutted I dropped that catch! It's been an amazing week. I've been overwhelmed by the reaction... just proud of what I achieved,"Anderson said post game.
Gus Atkinson, who made his debut for England in James Anderson's final match, achieved remarkable success by taking two five-wicket hauls across both innings, earning him the Player of the Match award.
This is the first time an England bowler has accomplished this on debut since 1934 and the first by a fast bowler since Bob Massie (Australia) did it against England at Lord's in 1972.
Atkinson expressed his gratitude to Anderson for the significant contributions he made to English cricket throughout his career.
