Shreyas Iyer who is leading Punjab Kings pretty well this season of IPL, led KKR to their 3rd IPL title back in 2024. Sunil Gavaskar has reiterated that Shreyas Iyer’s role in Kolkata Knight Riders’ IPL title win was underappreciated, with recognition shifting elsewhere, hinting at Gambhir being praised overwhelmingly.

Despite leading KKR to their third championship with 351 runs at an average of 39 and stellar leadership, Shreyas Iyer was released post-season. Punjab Kings secured him for INR 26.75 crore in the mega auction.

Gavaskar Claims Iyer Was Undervalued In KKR

Speaking of KKR's release and the acknowledgements post the title win, Sunil Gavaskar threw some mud on KKR's then mentor Gautam Gambhir with cryptic praise.

“He didn't get the credit for the IPL victory last season. All the plaudits were given to someone else. It's the captain, who plays a major role in what's happening in the middle and not someone sitting in the dugout. See, this year he's getting fair credit. No one is giving all the credit to Ricky Ponting,” Gavaskar said on Star Sports, as quoted by India Today.

Iyer’s Stellar Form Fuels Punjab Kings’ Playoff Charge

Currently third in the standings, Punjab Kings owe much to Iyer’s consistency and sharp leadership. The franchise eyes a top-spot push in their clash against Rajasthan Royals, despite a dismal historical record. Gavaskar, however, emphasizes that Iyer’s influence as captain remains pivotal, contrasting it with last year’s misplaced credit.

With momentum on their side, Punjab aims to defy odds in Jaipur, banking on Iyer’s form and tactical nous to cement a playoffs berth.
