The IPL 2025 season is set to restart on Saturday, May 17 with a match between hosts RCB and defending champions KKR in Bengaluru. Ahead of the IPL 2025 resumption, former Indian cricketer Sunil Gavaskar has claimed that the 10-day break in between might shift the momentum for the rest of the tournament.
While speaking with the broadcasters, he said that teams like Delhi Capitals, Mumbai Indians and Punjab Kings might utilise this pause to reassess and make improvements to their game.
Sunil Gavaskar speaks on IPL 2025 break
While speaking with the Star Sports network, Sunil Gavaskar initially claimed that the recent break this IPL 2025 season might hamper the winning momentum of several teams. He said:
“We’ve often seen a batter lose rhythm after spending time at the non-striker’s end without facing much strike—just that short pause can affect momentum. Similarly, the recent break in the tournament might slow down teams that were on a winning streak.”
However, Sunil Gavaskar also backed teams like Delhi Capitals, Mumbai Indians and Punjab Kings to come out stronger after the break by improving and reassessing their game. He added:
“For sides like Delhi Capitals, Mumbai Indians, or Punjab Kings, the pause could help—they can reassess and figure out how to improve. The next 8–10 days will be very interesting. At the start, the league is like a marathon with 14 games. But now, with only 2-3 matches left, it’s a sprint to the finish—to break into the top four, or ideally, the top two.”
Punjab Kings is currently ranked third on the IPL 2025 points table with 15 points from 11 matches. They are followed by Mumbai Indians at four and Delhi Capitals at five with 14 and 13 points respectively.
The IPL 2025 will resume on May 17 after a 10-day break, a move initiated by the BCCI citing India’s security concerns with Pakistan. With ceasefire in effect, several overseas players, barring few, have returned back to India to join their respective franchises.
