A successful tour filled with historic achievements, New Zealand, led by Tom Latham, has had time to remember against the formidable Rohit Sharma and co. Defeating them in two back-to-back games, the Kiwis are one victory away to whitewash India for the first time at home since 2000.
Tom Latham Scripts History
Under the leadership of Latham, New Zealand achieved their first Test series win over India on Indian soil; with this, he became the first New Zealand skipper to accomplish this feat. Interestingly, this defeat ended India's 4331-day unbeaten streak in the home Test series.
Speaking about the recent triumph of the BlackCaps, wicket-keeper batter Tom Blundell has said that India was left 'shell-shocked' after they underestimated the Kiwis following their defeat to Sri Lanka. He further highlighted how the excellent cricket played by the team beat the Indian team, one of the best in the world.
"They're a little bit shell-shocked. When we first came over, I think they had a slogan on TV saying five-nil for their home summer, or something along those lines. I'm pretty sure they wrote us off coming after Sri Lanka.
But I think they're pretty shocked in terms of what we've achieved, and how we've come out and competed and played some really good cricket to beat these guys – one of the best teams in the world. I think they're a little bit shell-shocked in terms of what has happened," Blundell told SENZ Mornings.
New Zealand Spills Water On India's WTC Chances
The 34-year-old also added that the upcoming WTC has played a significant role in motivating the team. Despite their qualification being a challenge, he said India was severely hurt after the two losses. He further stated that this was the biggest highlight of his career and that the team would return with big smiles.
"You've got the World Test Championship still on the line, that's something that motivates us as well. But it's going to be a challenge. India are probably hurting from this. But regardless of the result, we can go home with a pretty big smile on our faces. What we've achieved here is pretty immense, it's probably one of the biggest highlights of my career. We're excited. We've got a possibility of beating them 3-0. But regardless of that, we're pretty chuffed," Blundell added.
India, who previously had a comfortable chance of making it to the WTC Final, now faces a tough challenge as they need to win four out of six remaining games to qualify. Meanwhile, India and New Zealand lock horns one more time in the final Test match of the series at the iconic Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai from 1 November onwards.
