On Friday, June 20, India will face England in the first of a five-Test match series. Ahead of this much-anticipated contest, controversy has erupted as fans and the cricket fraternity expressed disappointment over the rebranding of the Pataudi Trophy.

Notably, the ECB and BCCI decided to rename the Pataudi Trophy after James Anderson and Sachin Tendulkar. This move sparked debate, with fans and cricket experts upset over the discontinuation of the Pataudi legacy.

Ex-India Cricketer Slams Sachin Tendulkar

In a recent development, Sachin Tendulkar intervened, urging both the BCCI and ECB to preserve the Pataudi Trophy’s name. The boards agreed to his request and, while going ahead with the rebranding, introduced a medal ceremony named after Pataudi. The winning team will now receive the ‘Pataudi Medal’.

While fans have praised Sachin’s generosity for stepping in, former India star Karsan Ghavri is not impressed and has criticized the Master Blaster for not objecting earlier.

“If ECB and BCCI have given someone’s name for the trophy, it remains forever. They can’t change it in five or 10 years. These are not regular names; both are big players. Pataudi and his father Iftikhar Ali Khan were both very distinguished cricketers. By doing this name change, you are putting them down,” Ghavri told mid-day on Wednesday.

“Sachin Tendulkar himself should have told them that this should not happen. If BCCI put their foot down, they still can ensure the Pataudi Trophy continues. Sachin is the greatest batsman of all time and Anderson is a great fast bowler from England. Both are great ambassadors of their countries. If you want to honour them, give all players Anderson-Tendulkar medals,” he concluded.

Recently, Sachin, speaking to Revsportz, remarked that he would never disrespect seniors and he himself made a call to BCCI urging them to continue with Pataudi's legacy.

"In every way I feel humbled that the trophy was named after Jimmy Anderson who has been one of the greatest players to play for England and myself. But again I repeat, I’d never show disrespect to my seniors and that’s why I did what I did and spoke to the Pataudi family to make sure that the Pataudi name also continues to be a part of this series,” Sachin said speaking to Revsportz.

The Master Blaster also added that alongside the medal ceremony, the series name will also be under Nawab Pataudi.
