Indian captain Rohit Sharma expressed profound admiration for Ravichandran Ashwin ahead of his 100th Test in Dharamsala, commencing on Thursday, March 7, highlighting Ashwin's significant contributions as a match-winner for the Indian team.

With an impressive tally of 507 wickets in 99 Tests at an average of 23.91, Ashwin has solidified his position as one of the premier all-rounders in modern-day cricket.

His stellar performance on home soil is particularly noteworthy, boasting 354 wickets in 59 Tests at an impressive average of 21.33. Additionally, Ashwin has showcased his batting prowess, accumulating 1,824 runs at an average of 27.22 in home conditions.

In the pre-match press conference, Rohit lauded Ashwin's monumental achievement of reaching 100 Tests, underscoring his invaluable contributions to the team's success.

Rohit reminisced about their shared history, having played together in the Under-19 team, where Ashwin initially started as an opener before transitioning into a prominent spinner.

“R Ashwin playing 100 Tests is a big achievement. He has been a big match-winner for us. I’m short of words when it comes to describing his legacy. Every series, he has had big contributions. I played U19 with him when he was opener… even I used to bowl then, later became batter,” said Rohit Sharma in the press-conference.

Ashwin's Test journey commenced in the home series against the West Indies in Delhi, where he immediately left a mark with a stellar performance, claiming nine wickets.

Since then, he has emerged as India's go-to bowler, particularly in favourable home conditions. Ashwin's versatility extends to his batting, where he has often played crucial innings to bolster India's total in the past.

As India holds a commanding 3-1 lead in the series against England, the final Test in Dharamshala presents an opportunity for both teams to accrue World Test Championship points despite the series outcome already determined.

Ashwin's monumental milestone adds an extra layer of significance to the upcoming Test match as the cricketing fraternity celebrates his remarkable career and enduring impact on the sport.
