'Selectors Don't Have Guts': Ex-Indian Cricketer Questions Rohit, Kohli's T20I Comeback

Former Indian cricketer Aakash Chopra has delivered a bold assessment regarding the return of Indian skipper Rohit Sharma and batting stalwart Virat Kohli to the T20I squad, asserting that no selector has the courage to drop either player.

India is set to face Afghanistan in a three-match T20I series, which will begin with the first game in Mohali on Thursday, January 11. The BCCI unveiled a 16-man squad for the series, marking the comeback of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli after a 14-month hiatus from the shortest format since the T20 World Cup 2022.

Aakash contended that Rohit and Kohli earned their places in the T20I squad not based on their IPL performances but due to their contributions in the ODI World Cup 2023. He emphasized that even if selectors contemplated dropping one of them, they lacked the courage to make such a decision.

"If the selectors had thought of dropping either, I don’t think any selector has (the guts) to drop one and pick the other. Not going to happen. Either both would have been picked or dropped. Rohit (Sharma), (Virat) Kohli would have been either selected or dropped. No one has the guts to pick one and drop another, which is not possible for anyone to do," said Aakash Chopra on his YouTube channel.

While Rohit and Kohli were the primary inclusions, several other changes were made to the setup. With Hardik Pandya, Suryakumar Yadav and Ruturaj Gaikwad unavailable due to injuries, the selectors introduced capable backups for all three positions, along with a few notable omissions.

With Kohli and Sharma back in the side, it seems increasingly likely that both of them will participate in the upcoming T20 World Cup scheduled for June in the West Indies and USA. The series against Afghanistan represents India's final T20I engagement before the mega event.
