Defending champions England slumped to their fifth World Cup 2023 defeat, and their fourth in succession as they fell 100 runs short of tournament hosts India in Lucknow.

Chasing 230 to secure a much-needed win, England’s top-order was jolted early by Indian speedsters Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Shami, with the latter finishing with 4-22 from his seven overs.

After the match, losing skipper Jos Buttler lamented his side’s lacklustre batting efforts and defended his decision of bowling first.

Jos Buttler says team fancied to get to 230

During the post-match presentation, England captain Jos Buttler stated that the team had fancied itself to chase down 230, before expressing his disappointment over yet another batting failure from his side. The cricketer expressed his intent of chasing and lamented his team for showing a lack of commitment against the Indian bowlers in a must-win game. He said:

“Yeah. Very disappointed. At the halfway stage, we fancied ourselves to chase 230 but it was the same old story with the bat. The gut feeling was we wanted to chase, whether dew came or not. Our bowling has been great but again the batting was disappointing. I think we have to be committed to that. I felt I had to stay there as the Indian bowlers were bowling well and had to soak in the pressure.”

The defending champions, currently placed at the bottom of the World Cup 2023 points table, are also on the brink of facing a qualifying failure for the 2025 Champions Trophy in Pakistan. As per the format rules, the top eight sides from the ongoing tournament will be eligible for participation in the premier ODI event.

Buttler, fully aware of the qualification scenario and England’s current struggles, said the team has still a lot to play for in their remaining three matches of the 2023 World Cup.

“We are aware of that and it's still lots to play for. Thank you.”

Jos Buttler and co. will now go up against Ashes rivals Australia on November 4. The much-awaited showdown will be played out at the iconic Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
