Brief Scores: India: 229-9 (50 overs) [Rohit Sharma: 87 (101), Suryakumar Yadav: 49 (47); David Willey 3/45 (10), Chris Woakes 2/33 (9)] defeated England: 129 all out (34.5 overs) [Liam Livingstone: 27 (46), David Willey: 16* (17); Mohammed Shami 4/22 (7), Jasprit Bumrah 3/32 (6.5)] by 100 runs.

Team India triumphed over defending champions England to preserve their unbeaten run at the 2023 World Cup.

Rohit Sharma overcomes ENG after rare Virat Kohli failure

Team India found itself in a slightly unfamiliar territory after they were put into bat first by England, thus making way from their usual run-chase template this tournament.

Opener Shubman Gill, star attraction Virat Kohli and number four Shreyas Iyer all fell in quick succession as a three-wicket burst from David Willey and Chris Woakes jolted India early at 40-3. Thereafter, captain Rohit Sharma took up his side’s run-scoring charge by forming 87 tense runs from just 101 balls, and staged a counterattacking 91-run stand with KL Rahul for the fourth wicket.

Suryakumar Yadav also added 49 runs from his end, while Jasprit Bumrah’s handy 16 at the death guided the ‘Men in Blue’ to a competitive 229 upfront.

England’s new-ball speedster Willey, after trapping Kohli for a duck, claimed two more wickets in the innings to finish with 3-45 from his 10 overs. His new-ball partner Woakes and ace spinner Adil Rashid also struck twice each in the innings to return with identical spells.

Shami, Bumrah pack ENG within 100 runs of their target

Jonny Bairstow and Dawid Malan raced to a 30-run opening stand in the first five overs before Jasprit Bumrah cleaned up Malan and number three Joe Root to change the course of the game in a space of two deliveries.

Mohammed Shami also joined in the party by scything through England’s middle-order with key wickets of Ben Stokes, Moeen Ali, Jonny Bairstow and Adil Rashid to finish with 4-22.

Liam Livingstone conjured 27 runs to top-score in the innings before he became Kuldeep Yadav’s second victim of the evening. Bumrah landed the finishing blow by cleaning up Mark Wood as the Englishmen fell 100 runs short of their target in their must-win game.

India’s latest win sustained their unbeaten World Cup 2023 run to six matches as Rohit Sharma and co. displaced South Africa from the top of the points table.
