India secured a thumping victory over defending champions England, besting them by a staggering 100-run margin in the World Cup 2023 clash at the Ekana Stadium in Lucknow on Sunday.

IND vs ENG: Rohit opens up on stellar win vs England

This win has propelled India to the top of the points table, making their qualification aspirations almost a foregone conclusion after a streak of six consecutive wins.

The limelight undeniably belonged to captain Rohit Sharma, who smashed an excellent 87 on a wicket that many found treacherous. Post-match, Rohit, who was adjudged the 'Player of the Match,' reflected on the pitch's early challenges and highlighted the significance of his partnership with KL Rahul.

Rohit pointed out the pitch's evolving nature and how his experience allowed him to navigate through the initial hurdles. The 36-year-old added that the team could have added another 30-40 runs to their tally. However, he was satisfied with the bowler's performance.

“Yeah. Looking at where we were, after 10 overs, it was important to create that partnership. Myself and KL had that partnership. The wicket was challenging at the start but it got better as the game progressed. Obviously, I have got the experience to bat according to the situation. When you have that experience, you do what the team needs. It was important for me to take the game deep. I feel we still were 30-40 runs short but happy with the performance of the bowlers,” said Rohit.

Rohit went on to state how facing the moving new ball was a difficult task, but he managed to hang on.

Furthermore, in the grand scheme of things, the seasoned campaigner wasn't looking a gift horse in the mouth as he expressed gratitude for the win.

"Playing against the new ball was challenging. They were getting some movement with the new ball but as I dug in, it became easier to bat on. I still feel we were 30-40 runs short but I will definitely take the win any day,” concluded the Indian skipper.

Earlier in the day, England captain Jos Buttler invited India to bat first for the first time this tournament. While India's batting innings had its ebbs and flows, there were moments of sheer genius. Besides Rohit's classic knock, Suryakumar Yadav stirred the pot with a fiery 49. KL Rahul, chipping in with a solid 39, was the backbone of the middle order.

However, England's bowlers found chinks in India's armour, stopping their run-fest at 229/9. But when the tables turned, India's pacers, spearheaded by the lethal combination of Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Shami, turned up the heat.

They had English batters bamboozled, grabbing seven wickets between them and bundling out England for a paltry 129. With this win, India has thrown down the gauntlet to other contenders, signalling their intent in the tournament.
