Pakistan T20I captain Salman Ali Agha has shared an important update regarding the fitness of premier fast bowler Shaheen Shah Afridi ahead of the ICC T20 World Cup 2026, scheduled to be held next month across India and Sri Lanka.
While addressing the media prior to the three-match T20I series against Sri Lanka, Salman Ali Agha confirmed that Shaheen Afridi is currently undergoing rehabilitation at the National Cricket Academy (NCA). The team management remains optimistic about the left-arm pacer’s recovery timeline as preparations continue at full pace.
Salman Agha confirms Shaheen Afridi’s rehabilitation at NCA
Salman Ali Agha said, "Shaheen is currently doing rehab at the NCA and we hope he will be fit before the T20 World Cup."
Notably, Shaheen Afridi recently featured in the Big Bash League (BBL), marking his first appearance in the tournament. However, the 25-year-old endured a difficult stint with Brisbane Heat, managing only two wickets across four matches at a high average. During the tournament, he suffered a setback to his left knee, which forced him into rehabilitation.
Positive signs emerge from Shaheen Afridi's recovery process
It is important to note that several media reports have suggested that Shaheen’s rehabilitation could extend up to six weeks, raising doubts about his availability for the T20 World Cup. Despite these reports, optimism remains strong following the emergence of a recent video from Rehab, showing Shaheen training intensely at the NCA.

Meanwhile, the PCB has placed significant emphasis on Shaheen Afridi’s recovery, especially with the mega tournament approaching. It has been reported that he has been added to Pakistan’s preliminary squad for the T20 World Cup.
Salman Ali Agha backs emerging players for key opportunities
Salman Ali Agha also addressed squad selection matters, confirming that Babar Azam will not feature in the Sri Lanka series due to his BBL commitments. With both Babar Azam and Shaheen Afridi unavailable, Pakistan has opted for a youthful squad, providing opportunities to emerging players. Speaking on the selection approach, he said,
"Babar and Shaheen are megastars, but the players we have brought here are very good as well. We wanted to give them a chance. There are a few players who are the future of Pakistan cricket, and hopefully, they will perform well".
Salman Ali Agha shares his thoughts on Shadab Khan
Another notable development is the return of Shadab Khan, who has rejoined the national side following recovery from shoulder surgery. His strong performances in the BBL impressed selectors and reinforced his readiness for international cricket. Salman Ali Agha commented on his comeback, stating,
"He came back from a long injury and did well in the BBL. Managing all those spinners and all-rounders is going to be tough, but to be honest, it's like a luxury for us to have so many all-rounders who can bat and bowl in any condition".
Pakistan will take on Sri Lanka in a three-match T20I series at Dambulla, with fixtures scheduled for January 7, January 9, and January 11.
