'Rohit To Be Kept Among Top-Most If India Win Tests In South Africa' - Irfan Pathan

Irfan Pathan believes Indian skipper Rohit Sharma has the chance to etch himself in the history of Indian cricket with golden letters via the forthcoming two-match Test series in South Africa. The former pacer reckons Rohit's name will be kept in the top bracket of Indian captains if he can guide his troops to a series win in the rainbow nation.

South Africa remains an unconquered territory for Team India, having not clinched a Test series win on Proteas shores over the past 31 years since the first trip in 1991-92 in the post-apartheid era. The Asian giants have been on eight previous Test trips to the country and won four Test matches but not a series.

Rohit's troops have the chance to rewrite the history books against an in-transition South African side which has heaps of youngsters vying for places under new skipper Temba Bavuma.

Irfan On Rohit's Chance To Rewrite History In South Africa

Speaking to Star Sports, Irfan underlined the importance of the assignment to Rohit's legacy as a captain after missing out on a golden chance to become a World Cup-winning skipper in home conditions in November with a painstaking defeat in the final against Australia.

"If Rohit Sharma is able to conquer South Africa, his name will be kept top-most in India's cricket history as captain and player because only he has the key to win both these matches," Irfan said.

"He is both an opener and a captain. If you play out the new ball, your other batters will get the chance to shine. That's why you should remove the shine from the new ball."

Irfan recalled the 2021 series in England where Rohit outbatted everyone else and top-scored for the series from either side and said he expects the veteran opener to prepare similarly for the Proteas challenge in Centurion and Cape Town.

The two-match Test series starts on December 26 via the Boxing Day Test in Centurion.
