Coetzee To Join Markram, Klaasen & Jansen? Here's SRH Squad Analysis & Auction Strategy

After winning the elusive title under David Warner’s leadership in 2016, Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) seemed to be a formidable unit to beat in the Indian Premier League (IPL) in the next five years, having made it to the playoffs every season. However, the results have drastically changed since then, with the team finishing at the bottom, third-bottom, and again as the wooden spoon in three of the following editions respectively.

From 2021 to 2023, the Orange Army only won 13 in 42 attempts, illustrating how lacklustre they had been in these seasons.

Let's be honest. The Hyderabd-based franchise looks OK on paper compared to what they have accomplished over the past three years. Last year, they almost had everything covered, but their star recruits, Aiden Markram in particular, failed to meet their lofty expectations, which resulted in their embarrassing losses one after another.

Prior to the IPL 2024 auctions, SRH refrained from going for a wholesale release, which is something they have done frequently in the past. However, Harry Brook, their INR 13.25 crore acquisition, is no longer in their roster, as the English youngster had mixed results all season long in the IPL 2023.

Among others, SRH let go of Kartik Tyagi, Adil Rashid, Akeal Hosein, Vivrant Sharma, and Samarth Vyas, with Kavya Maran spearheading the raising of the paddle during bidding wars.

IPL 2024 - SRH Squad Analysis

Let us examine what SRH currently have and what their requirements are before they go up for auction in Dubai on December 19.

SRH's Strength for IPL 2024

  • Solid batting Force: With Markram, Heinrich Klaasen, and red-hot Glenn Phillips, SRH boast three of the most sought-after overseas players in their batting unit. Among Indians, they have well-experienced Mayank Agarwal, Rahul Tripathi, and the in-form uncapped Abhishek Sharma to complement them, as well as Marco Jansen to follow, making their batting force look quite solid.

  • Variety of effective left-arm pacers: Given their success in the franchise leagues over the years, every team wants to add a left-arm fast bowler, and SRH have three outstanding options on their roster: Marco Jansen, Fazalhaq Farooqi, and T Natarajan. They can all have a significant impact on their days, and this is extremely rare in terms of acquisitions.

SRH's Weakness for IPL 2024

  • Too many unproven youngsters: Since the IPL's tagline is 'where talent meets opportunity,' having uncapped players who can hang out in the same dressing room with the biggest names in the world is extremely applaudable. Having too many of them, however, is counterproductive, as it weakens the squad's strength and reduces the pool of trustworthy backups.
  • Lack of wicket-taking spinners: Given India’s spin-friendly surface on major venues, a franchise must have some designated wizards in their lineup who can take wickets regularly. However, all SRH have are Washington Sundar, Mayank Markande, and recently traded Shahbaz Ahmed, suggesting that their spin unit looks vulnerable at this point.

Areas to fill for SRH in IPL 2024 Auction

  • A foreign middle-order batter as back-up: Now that Harry Brook is gone, SRH need to find a replacement for Phillips in case he struggles. Hence, if you have a big purse remaining and don’t have many slots to fill, going for someone who can bring authority into the middle order is not going to be a bad idea.
  • A well-known death-over specialist Indian pacer: Bhuvneshwar Kumar is getting old, and T Natarajan doesn’t have the spark that he used to have in the death overs. Therefore, SRH need to find someone who can remain composed under pressure. At the same point, it is also important to get an Indian, as their four foreign slots have already been occupied.
  •  An overseas spinner: Given that Adil Rashid and Akeal Hossein have both left, SRH will surely sign one foreign spinner, if not two.

SRH Targets In IPL 2024 Auction

Gerald Coetzee: Aiden Markram could be a major factor in signing Gerald Coetzee, who has been in a rich vein of form for some time. With Klaasen and Jansen already in the fold, Coetzee’s addition to SRH could make all four overseas players from South Africa.

Daryl Mitchell: The Kiwi all-rounder could be an excellent addition to the SRH, given that he can provide stability in the middle-order, and can be the best back-up for Phillips. Not to mention his versatility, which can provide Markram with more options.

Dawid Malan: The 36-year-old Englishman could be another smart acquisition for SRH, given he can bat at the top, or No. 3, and can play as an anchor. After a horrific show in IPL 2023, they desperately need someone in the top three who can be trustworthy, and Malan is just like that. However, bringing in would lead Phillips to warm the bench.

Kartik Tyagi: SRH released the promising 23-year-old right-arm quick, but don’t be surprised if they buy him back for a comparatively higher price. They have the budget, and even if other franchises challenge them, they can fight for him if they want to.

Harshal Patel: The IPL 2021-Purple Cap winner would love to find redemption, and SRH would love to take the opportunity, particularly because they need someone who can deliver in the death overs.

If SRH do not go after Tyagi, they have quite a few options to choose from, with Shivam Mavi, Chetan Sakariya, Sandeep Warrier, and Kamlesh Nagarkoti topping the wishlist among Indian fast bowlers.
