Under Rohit Sharma in the ongoing ICC Cricket World Cup 2023, India have been unstoppable and have already qualified for the semi-finals.

The highlight of India's campaign has been Sharma's on-point captaincy, and his deeds as a leader, which has been talked about all over social media, including his selfless batting.

However, prior to the World Cup, Sharma's batting form and constant experimentation with the playing XI across several series were heavily criticised by former players and fans alike, who now have been forced to praise the Mumbai Indians captain.

Former India captain and Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) president Sourav Ganguly has now revealed behind the stage scenes about Sharma's appointment as India's captain.

Sharma took over from former Indian skipper Virat Kohli under quite a tumultuous circumstances between the latter and BCCI, which was headed by Ganguly back then.

Speaking to Kolkata TV, Ganguly explained how Sharma was initially hesitant over taking the role of Team India captain, but caved in after the former's convincing.

Here's what Ganguly revealed

"Rohit Sharma wasn't keen for captaincy. It had gone to a stage where I said, You've to say yes or I'll announce you. After Virat Kohli left, he was the best man to lead Team India".

Overall, in 102 internationals — nine Tests, 42 ODIs, and 51 T20Is — as India captain, Sharma has won 76, lost 23, drawn two, and one has ended in no result.
