Virat Kohli is having an exceptional 2023 and has been India's backbone in the ongoing World Cup 2023, scoring 543 runs with two centuries, which include a record-levelling 49th ODI ton as well.

However, Kohli's purple patch began in Asia Cup 2022 and shone in T20 World Cup 2022 Down Under, where the former Indian captain shut his critics down.

Kohli's magnificent 82* off 53 against Pakistan at Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) stole the limelight away from the tournament and is still itched in the memories of fans. Recalling that win, Kohli reminisced about Indian skipper Rohit Sharma's charged celebration post the win where the latter lifted the former on his shoulders.

Speaking to Star Sports, the 35-year-old explained how this was a new side of Sharma, and how the T20 World Cup 2021 loss against Pakistan motivated the batter.

Here's what Kohli recalled

“I have played with Rohit for a long time but I have not seen him express so much. The defeat against Pakistan in 2021 never came to my mind (in 2022). Considering the big human error factor involved in sports, there is no guarantee that on a given day you will win. We were winning against Pakistan all those years but on that day, they outplayed us. There’s no shame in accepting that. It was a good reality check for everyone. We can’t play a match thinking we have to avenge a defeat in the past."

The batting maestro, who equalled Sachin Tendulkar's record of 49 ODI tons in Kolkata, will be in action against the Netherlands in India's final group match in Bangalore on Sunday.
