Former India captain, Sunil Gavaskar has made a bold remark by stating that Jasprit Bumrah should be made the India skipper if Rohit Sharma misses more than one Tests on the Australian tour. This comes after Rohit stated that he is likely to miss the first Test in Perth, starting on November 22.

As per reports, Rohit is set to welcome his second child with wife, Ritika Sajdeh and is likely to miss the first Test match. However, he is likely to come back in time for the second game as Jasprit Bumrah will most likely lead the Indian side in Rohit's absence.

Gavaskar didn't mince his words when he stated that the Indian team management should give a clarity on Rohit's status and he asserted that it is important that the India captain plays the first Test in Perth.

"It is important for the captain to play the first Test match. It's different if he is injured, but if he is not available, then the deputy leader will be under a lot of pressure. I have been reading that Rohit Sharma might not play the first two Tests of the Australia series. I feel that, in that case the selection committee should appoint Jasprit Bumrah the captain of the side for the entire Australia tour, and tell Rohit Sharma that you will participate as a player in this series," Gavaskar said, as quoted by India Today.

Rohit's poor run in Tests continued in NZ series

Just 94 runs in 3 Tests defined Rohit's form in the recently concluded Test series against the Kiwis. He was a pale shadow of himself and looked out of touch as Matt Henry made him his bunny throughout the 3-match series.

However, Rohit took the blame on himself and vowed to improve his form ahead of the much-anticipated Border-Gavaskar series. India, under Rohit's leadership lost the series, 0-3, and will now have to beat the Aussies 4-0 to book their place in the WTC finale.
