Former BCCI president Sourav Ganguly feels that India made the right move by picking Rohit Sharma as the captain of the team for the upcoming World Cup 2024.

After the 2023 World Cup, there were widespread reports suggesting that Rohit Sharma might not participate in the 2024 World Cup for India.

However, recently, the BCCI Secretary, Jay Shah, confirmed that Rohit Sharma will indeed lead the team in this prestigious tournament with Hardik Pandya acting as his deputy.

The former Indian captain pointed out how the Mumbai batter led from the front and guided the Men in Blue to the final of the ODI World Cup 2023, by winning 10 games in a row.

"Rohit Sharma is the right choice as India captain for the T20 World Cup. The way he led the Indian team and won 10 matches in the 50-over World Cup is still fresh in our memory. So, Rohit was the best choice," Sourav Ganguly told Mid-Day.

Following India's T20 World Cup 2022 semi-final loss to England, Rohit Sharma was sidelined from T20I matches until his return against Afghanistan.

Despite initial struggles with two ducks, the Indian opener bounced back spectacularly, smashing his fifth T20I century in a thrilling series finale at M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru.

While Rohit was away from T20Is, Hardik Pandya assumed captaincy duties for the Indian team in the T20 format. Additionally, Pandya took over as captain of the Mumbai Indians, succeeding Rohit, ahead of the IPL 2024 campaign.

Such developments fuel speculation that Hardik might lead India in the upcoming World Cup in West Indies and the USA. However he hasn’t played a single game after he sustained injury during the ODI World Cup 2023 match against Bangladesh in Pune.
