Ricky Ponting has made a huge claim regarding his former Mumbai Indians teammate and current Indian captain Rohit Sharma. Ponting believes that Sharma has a sense of unfinished business in him, which might drive him to continue playing ODI cricket for India up until the 2027 World Cup in South Africa.
It is worth noting that Rohit Sharma recently disregarded rumours regarding his potential retirement from ODI cricket. The legendary Indian opener confirmed the same after leading the ‘Men in Blue’ to an emphatic 2025 ICC Champions Trophy win in the UAE.
Ricky Ponting speculates Rohit Sharma’s ODI future
While speaking on the ICC Review, former Australian captain Ricky Ponting addressed Rohit Sharma’s response to a reporter regarding his retirement from ODI cricket.
Ponting believes that since Sharma has refused to retire from ODIs at the moment, the legendary Indian opener might continue to brace the format till the 2027 World Cup. The two-time World Cup winning Australian skipper said:
“I think he was just trying to put those questions to bed once and for all and say, 'no, I'm still playing well enough. I love playing in this team. I love leading this team.' And I think, the fact that he said that, to me, it means that he must have that goal in mind of playing in the next (50-over) World Cup (in 2027).”
Back in June 2024 last year, Rohit Sharma announced his retirement from T20Is after leading Team India to victory at the 2024 T20 World Cup. Several fans similarly speculated that the Indian skipper might also confirm his ODI retirement after India’s Champions Trophy 2025 final match against New Zealand, regardless of the result.
However, Sharma disregarded those claims and urged fans and media officials to refrain from spreading such rumours.
