Former Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi gave his brutal take on Pakistan’s current cricketing affairs, especially after the team’s winless campaign at the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy. Under the leadership of Mohammad Rizwan, the ‘Men in Green’ crashed to humiliating defeats against New Zealand and India before rains called off their planned fixture against Bangladesh.
With just one point from three games, the Pakistan cricket team finished the tournament at the bottom of the Group A points table. Shahid Afridi believes that Pakistan’s recent struggles can be attributed to the “lack of continuity or consistency” in PCB’s plans.
Shahid Afridi blames PCB for Pakistan struggles
Shahid Afridi compared the state of the current Pakistan team to that of a critically ill patient in the “ICU”. The legendary Pakistani all-rounder believes the ‘Men in Green’ have fallen to such a state owing to a series of incorrect decisions made by the PCB.
Afridi added that constant changing of team captains, coaches and players have also compounded in Pakistan’s misery, and urged the PCB officials to take accountability for their actions. He said:
“All the time we talk about preparations, and when an event comes and we flop, then we talk about surgery. Fact is, Pakistan cricket is in ICU because of incorrect decisions.”
“There is no continuity, consistency in the board’s decisions and policies. We keep changing captains, coaches, or some players, but in the end, what is the accountability for Board officials?”
Shahid Afridi also highlighted the recent trend of players, coaches and management pinning the blame on each other after every major setback. He added:
“It is sad to see coaches blaming players to save their jobs and the management blaming players and coaches to save their seats. How can our cricket progress when there is a sword hanging constantly over the captain and coaches' heads?”
The Pakistan cricket team, in the absence of several senior players, is currently in New Zealand to play a series of five T20Is and three ODI matches. The first match of the tour will be hosted by the Hagley Oval in Christchurch on March 16.
