'Rinku Singh Is Left-Handed MS Dhoni…'- Ravi Ashwin Heaps Huge Praise On KKR Star

India’s hard-hitting radical Rinku Singh blasted six sixes and listed his career-best T20I score of 69* against Afghanistan in the third match of their series in January 2024. The cricketer scored 94 unbeaten runs through the three games, mere weeks after powering India to an emphatic ODI series win in South Africa with a match-defining cameo at Paarl.

Off the back of Rinku's stellar run with the bat lower down the order for Team India, senior all-rounder and Test specialist Ravichandran Ashwin heaped massive praise on the youngster as he indirectly compared the 26-year-old with former captain and legendary wicketkeeper-batter MS Dhoni.

Ravi Ashwin likens Rinku Singh with MS Dhoni

Indian all-rounder Ravichandran Ashwin has described Rinku Singh as a 'left-handed MS Dhoni' owing to his "composed batting" in challenging situations.

On his YouTube channel, Ashwin also talked about Rinku's consistency in domestic cricket for Uttar Pradesh, which eventually landed him an IPL deal for the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). He said:

“He is somebody I’d call a left-handed Dhoni. I can’t compare him to Dhoni just yet because Dhoni is too big. But, I am talking about the composure that he brings. He has been consistently scoring buckets of runs for UP and broke his way into the Indian team."

"He was on the KKR bench for many years. People used to tell me that, when he was at KKR, even though he couldn’t get the chance to bat at practice, he collected all the balls that batters hit in throwdowns and gave them back to the bowler.”

Ravichandran Ashwin believes the composure with which Rinku Singh bats never alters, as he plays with the same intent, either when his team is batting first or chasing. He added:

“The composure doesn’t change whether the team is batting first or chasing. His composure towards the back end of the innings is a bonus.”

In the third T20I against Afghanistan in Bengaluru, Rinku Singh blasted six sixes in his 39-ball 69*and shared a match-winning 190-run partnership with captain and opening batsman Rohit Sharma. In December 2023, the cricketer unfurled match-defining knocks against South Africa, including a sparkling 38 in the series-deciding third ODI at Paarl.

Rinku's batting blitz against Afghanistan and South Africa in successive T20I series catapulted his format average to a staggering 89. He is currently slated to represent the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) franchise in the forthcoming IPL 2024 season.
