The hero of India’s historic win at the Gabba in Brisbane in 2021, Rishabh Pant, revealed that he was celebrating the famous win like other members of the team. It was then that Rohit Sharma approached him and made him realize what he had done.

It’s been three years since India defeated Australia for the first time in the longest format at the Gabba. The series was leveled at 1-1, and the Men in Blue had a daunting task to upset Australia in Brisbane.

Chasing 328 was never going to be an easy task, but a resilient Indian team was at the forefront. The start, however, wasn’t great as Rohit Sharma fell cheaply, but it was Shubman Gill’s counter-attacking knock of 91 runs that helped the team bounce back.

However, the perfect finishing chapter of the Gabba story was written by Rishabh Pant, who scored an unbeaten knock of 89 runs off 138 balls. He fittingly smashed the winning runs, which helped the team win the match in the third and final session of the fifth day.

Speaking on the third anniversary of the heroic win, Pant admitted that he wasn't as jubilant as the rest of the team when he hit the winning runs in India's record chase of 328. He mentioned that for him, it was more about proving a point to himself after being omitted from the squad for the first Test of that unforgettable series.

"I remember what Rohit Sharma said. A lot of people told me special things, but Rohit's words, I remember well. He was observing my reaction. Everybody was happy, but he noticed that I wasn't as excited as everyone else. He told me, 'I don't think you realize what you have done.' I told him, 'yeah, we won a match, we won a series here for the 2nd time.' He said, 'when you quit cricket, you will understand the importance of this innings because you don't know what you have done.' That's when I realized what I had done,"  Pant said on Star Sports.

Pant's honest admission after the famous win

After being dropped for the first Test in Adelaide, where Wriddhiman Saha kept wickets, Pant came into the side after replacing Saha for the second Test in Melbourne.

There was no looking back from that point as Pant played a crucial role in India's fighting draw in Sydney and the historic win at the Gabba.

"I didn't know how to react. I was playing in the middle, conscious about not getting over-excited. Yes, there was a lot of happiness around. It was a very important match for me because I was not playing ODI and T20I,”  added Pant.

No team had beaten Australia at the Gabba in 28 years before India managed to do so in 2021, and Pant was named the Player of the Match.
