Pakistan's fielding has often been a subject of ridicule due to their frequent blunders. One notable incident took place during the 2nd ODI against the West Indies in 2022. Despite a commanding performance that saw Pakistan secure a 120-run victory, an error by captain Babar Azam resulted in an unusual five-run penalty that almost marred the triumph.

Pakistan had put up a strong performance in Multan, with the batters, including Babar Azam (77) and Imam-ul-Haq (72), leading the team to a score of 275/8. Mohammad Nawaz’s four-wicket haul further ensured the Windies were bowled out for 155. This win gave Pakistan an unassailable 2-0 lead in the series, following a previous victory by five wickets.

Babar Azam’s Unusual Fielding Mistake

However, the match was not without controversy. During the 29th over of the Windies' run-chase, an unusual mistake by Babar Azam drew the umpires' attention. In a move that startled many, Azam was observed using one of wicket-keeper Mohammad Rizwan's gloves to collect a throw behind the stumps. This action was deemed illegal under cricket laws.

According to Law 28.1, “No fielder other than the wicket-keeper shall be permitted to wear gloves or external leg guards. In addition, protection for the hand or fingers may be worn only with the consent of the umpires.” The use of Rizwan’s gloves by Azam was a clear breach of this rule, leading the on-field umpire to impose a five-run penalty on Pakistan.

Babar Azam's Stellar Performance Despite The Setback

Despite the fielding mishap, Babar Azam’s performance with the bat remained exemplary. Following his impressive 100 in the first ODI, Azam once again played a crucial role, scoring a half-century and significantly contributing to Pakistan’s total. His leadership and batting prowess continued to shine, ensuring that the penalty did not overshadow the team's overall success.
