Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar has stirred up debate ahead of India’s Asia Cup 2025 Super Four campaign by suggesting that Jasprit Bumrah should be rested against arch-rivals Pakistan in their upcoming clash on Sunday.

Bumrah, who has picked up 3 wickets in the Asia Cup so far, has looked slightly rusty since returning from his recent workload management phase. He featured in 3 out of 5 Tests against England earlier this year and returned with 2 five-wicket hauls.

Sunny G Wants Jasprit Bumrah To Stay Away From Pakistan

Speaking to Sony Sports Network, Sunil Gavaskar explained that after the Oman game, India can even rest Jasprit Bumrah from their first Super Four game against Pakistan. He believes the spearhead can stay away from the high-voltage clash as India’ s spinners are enough to handle them on Dubai's slow track.

"I believe Jasprit Bumrah should be rested, perhaps for the Pakistan game, so he’s available for the bigger match [final] on Sunday, the 28th. That’s what India should be looking at." Gavaskar said.

According to Gavaskar, India should also test their batting depth, as players like Sanju Samson, Tilak Varma, and Hardik Pandya need valuable time in the middle, something they haven’t had much of so far.

“I would like to think that India would consider batting first and keep the same opening pair. Maybe number three, Suryakumar Yadav, the skipper, could drop himself down the order, giving Tilak Verma a chance for some time at the crease and allowing Sanju Samson a bit of a hit as well," he added.

India To Face Pakistan Again Amid Massive Uproar

That being said, the ‘no handshake’ row hasn’t even died down yet, and India is set to face Pakistan again in the Super Four stage of the Asia Cup 2025. The match is set to be held on Sunday, September 21, at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium.

The last time the two rivals clashed, Pakistan surrendered to 127/9 in the first inning. India completed the cakewalk chase in 15.5 overs and refused to shake hands after the match, a move that led to large-scale controversy.
