'Reminded Me of Those Days...': Rohit Sharma Reminisces Debut While Batting at No. 7

During the first ODI against West Indies in Barbados, Team India captain Rohit Sharma reflected on his international debut as he batted at No. 7, similar to his early days in the Indian team.

India dominated the match, securing a comprehensive five-wicket victory with over 27 overs to spare. Left-arm spinners Kuldeep Yadav and Ravindra Jadeja played pivotal roles in dismantling the West Indies batting lineup.

Ishan Kishan's aggressive innings of 52 helped India maintain control of the chase, although the loss of three wickets towards the end slightly dampened the triumph. The match served as an opportunity for young batting aspirants, with Virat Kohli not featuring and Rohit Sharma coming in only at the fall of the fifth wicket.

Rohit made his international debut during an ODI against Ireland on June 23, 2007. Although he didn't get a chance to bat in that match, he made his debut appearance just three days later in the first of three ODIs against South Africa in Belfast, Ireland. Scoring eight runs in nine balls, Rohit was dismissed by Jacques Kallis as India lost by four wickets.

This recent match was the first time since his debut in 2007 that Rohit batted at No. 7 in international cricket, and he couldn't help but reminisce about his early days. He shared his thoughts during the post-match presentation ceremony.

"I made my debut for India and was batting at number 7, reminded me of those days,”  said Rohit Sharma in the post-match presentation ceremony.

Rohit also expressed surprise at the pitch's behavior, which offered something for both seamers and spinners. Initially, he didn't anticipate such conditions and mentioned that the team's decision to bowl first was driven by the pitch conditions. Despite the challenges, India's bowlers performed admirably, limiting West Indies to a manageable score.

"I never thought the pitch would play like that, it was the team's need to bowl first. The pitch had everything for seamers and spinners, our guys did well to restrict them to that score.”

With the focus on the upcoming ODI World Cup at home, the match provided an excellent opportunity for India to evaluate younger players and fine-tune their strategies. While Rohit Sharma looked back on his past, the team's resounding victory highlighted their potential for future success.
