MI New York, on Friday, July 28, beat Washington Freedom in the Eliminator match of the Major League Cricket (MLC) 2023 by 16 runs to advance to the challenger stage, where they will face Texas Super Kings to vie for a spot in the tournament's final alongside Seattle Orcas.  

In a low-scoring affair, Washington Freedom won the toss and chose to bowl first. MI New York put up a total of 141 runs on the scoreboard, with Dewald Brevis's fifty and Tim David's explosive batting stealing the show during the stipulated 20 overs. 

In reply, Washington Freedom had a disastrous start, finding themselves at 60/3 within the first 10 overs. However, the tension escalated when a spectacular run-out unfolded during their run chase, leaving the fans and even the commentators in awe.  

In the 10.1 over, Nosthush Kenjige delivered a back-of-length ball outside off stump which saw Ahmed responding with a backfoot dab to backward point. Glenn Phillips called for a swift single, but Ahmed's hesitance cost him dearly. Nosthush Kenjige's sensational direct hit at the bowler's end ended Ahmed's innings.

From there on, Washington Freedom's batting lost its momentum, leading to a collapse that saw them finishing with only 125 runs in 20 overs, falling short of the target by 16 runs.

Trent Boult stood out as the star bowler for MI New York, claiming an impressive 4-wicket haul while giving away only 20 runs in his four overs. Nosthush Kenjige also made an impact with two wickets, and David Wiese added one wicket to his name.
