Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), one of the most celebrated teams in the Indian Premier League (IPL), is yet to win the coveted trophy. The team recently wrapped up the IPL 2025 auction in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, making some big signings like Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Phil Salt, Tim David, Liam Livingstone, and Jitesh Sharma.

However, RCB couldn’t secure a clear candidate for the captaincy role during the auction. Rumors about Virat Kohli wanting to return as captain have been making rounds, and now, RCB legend AB de Villiers has confirmed it.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, De Villiers said Kohli will likely take over the captaincy, even though there’s no official announcement yet.

"Virat Kohli, I don't think it has been confirmed yet but he will be captain looking at the squad," De Villiers said.

The former South African cricketer also shared his thoughts on RCB’s squad. He was happy with the team’s picks, including Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Josh Hazlewood, and Lungi Ngidi.

"We got Bhuvneshwar Kumar, happy with Josh Hazlewood. We did miss out on a couple here and there. Rabada was close, but at least we got Lungi Ngidi. He's got a wonderful slower ball, if he is in form and fit, he is a force to be reckoned with," South African great added.

Kohli’s Past Captaincy Record In IPL

Virat Kohli previously led RCB from 2013 to 2021, during which the team reached the playoffs four times. Their best performance came in 2016 when they finished as runners-up.

As reported earlier, discussions with RCB management have paved the way for Kohli’s return as captain for IPL 2025.

RCB spent ₹82.25 crore in the auction to secure 19 players, with Josh Hazlewood being their most expensive buy at ₹12.50 crore. The team now has ₹75 lakh left in their purse.
