India Test and ODI captain Rohit Sharma is set to return to the action and lead Team India in the second Test against Australia, starting December 6 in Adelaide. Rohit missed the opening Test in Perth as he was with his family for the birth of his second child. After joining the team on November 24, he will also captain India in a two-day warm-up match against the Prime Minister's XI before the Test.

Rohit Nears Ricky Ponting's Record

Rohit Sharma is on the brink of surpassing Ricky Ponting on a prestigious captaincy list. With just one more win in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, Rohit will go past Ponting as the captain with the most wins in this historic series. During Ponting's time as Australia's captain, his team dominated world cricket but struggled against India, winning only two of their 11 Test matches against them.

A win in Adelaide would also make Rohit India’s second-most successful Test captain against Australia, just behind MS Dhoni. Dhoni led India to eight Test wins over Australia, topping the charts. Others on the list include Ajinkya Rahane, Sunil Gavaskar, Sourav Ganguly, and Virat Kohli, all of whom guided India to victories in three matches each.

This will be Rohit's first time captaining India in a Test match in Australia. On their previous tour down under, he served as vice-captain under Ajinkya Rahane. Early in 2022, Rohit officially replaced Rahane as vice-captain before taking over as India’s full-time Test skipper.

India will face Australia in the 2nd Test at the Adelaide Oval in the pink-ball Test on December 6. The remaining matches in the series are scheduled as follows:

  • 3rd Test: December 14-18, The Gabba, Brisbane
  • 4th Test: December 26-30, Melbourne Cricket Ground, Melbourne
  • 5th Test: January 3-7, Sydney Cricket Ground, Sydney
