Former legendary England fast bowler James Anderson has advised seamers of Australia and South Africa to bowl ‘three-quarters up the stump’ instead of ‘top of off stump’ to succeed at Lords. His advice comes just hours before the World Test Championship 2025 Final.
The WTC 2025 final is scheduled for June 11 at the iconic Lord’s Cricket Ground. Australia, the defending champions, will take on South Africa, who will be vying for their maiden title.
Ahead of the big clash, former legendary pacer James Anderson believes the seamers will make a huge difference in the final result of the high-stakes game.
James Anderson Suggests Right Length To Bowl For WTC Finalists
The match is expected to be a battle between the fast bowlers. South Africa has strong bowlers like Kagiso Rabada, Lungi Ngidi, and Marco Jansen. Australia also has powerful bowlers in their captain Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, and Josh Hazlewood.
Meanwhile, England's famous bowler, James Anderson, who has taken many wickets at Lord's, shared some tips for the fast bowlers.
Talking to Jonathan Healy of ICC at the DP World Beyond Boundaries event at Lord’s, Anderson advised seamers to bowl "three-quarters up the stump," which is a bit fuller than the usual "top of off stump" length. He believes this will be more effective at Lord's.
"Here is definitely somewhere you need to pitch the ball up. A lot of people talk about the top of off stump being the ideal length, but I think here it's more three-quarters up the stump. That way you are a little bit fuller in length, so that's my advice for the seamers," Anderson said.
Not only that, Anderson is especially keen to watch the contest between South Africa's Kagiso Rabada and Australia's Steve Smith. He called Rabada one of his favourite bowlers and Smith one of the best batters. He thinks this face-off could decide the winner of the match.
"The main one for me will be Rabada against Steve Smith and I think that could be a really good, interesting battle. Steve Smith is one of the best batters in the world and Kagiso Rabada is one of my favourite bowlers to watch. I think he's got so many attributes that just make me want to tune into the TV and watch him. He's a fantastic player, so I'm really looking forward to that battle," he added.
Anderson Reacts To Stuart Broad Joining South Africa
South Africa made a smart move by having Stuart Broad, another great English bowler, help their team as a consultant. Anderson, a close ally of Broad, thinks this is a good idea because Broad knows English conditions and Lord's very well, and can give valuable advice to the South African players.
"I think it's a smart move from South Africa. He's someone who's had great success in English conditions and he knows Lord's in particular. He knows the ground very well, he's had success here and I think he can give a lot of information and advice to the South African team which will be great from their point of view," Anderson also said.
The WTC 2025 final will begin on June 11 at Lord's Cricket Ground from 3.00 PM IST.
