Team India is enjoying a dream run in the ongoing World Cup 2023, having won all eight matches played in the tournament. They are the only undefeated team so far and were also the first to qualify for the semifinals.
While Indian batters are in stellar form, a considerable portion of credit for their outstanding performance in the ongoing matches must be directed towards the bowling attack, especially the pace bowlers who have consistently kept the opposition on their toes.
While Jasprit Bumrah's economical spells mount pressure, Mohammed Shami strikes early with the new ball, and Mohammed Siraj adds his own brilliance to the mix.
While the cricket world lauds India's impressive bowling attack and its impact in the tournament, former captain Sourav Ganguly stands apart, and not agreeing that it stands as the finest in Team India's cricketing history.
The former BCCI president stated that the pace attack of the 2003 World Cup consisting of Ashish Nehra, Zaheer Khan, and Javagal Srinath was exceptional.
Here’s what Sourav Ganguly told Sports Tak:
"I can't say this is the best-ever Indian pace attack to date. In the 2003 World Cup, (Ashish) Nehra, Zaheer (Khan), and (Javagal) Srinath also bowled brilliantly.”
Ganguly also heaped praise on Bumrah, and stated that his presence in India’s bowling attack makes a massive difference.
"But yeah, it's exciting to see Bumrah, Shami and Siraj bowl. It's a big difference when you have Bumrah. There's pressure from both ends as it is always about bowing in pairs. Bumrah makes a massive impact on the other two as well.”
The former BCCI president didn't hold back in praising Shami's exceptional form in the ongoing tournament. Shami, who initially warmed the bench for the first four matches, has emerged as the team's leading wicket-taker with 16 wickets at an average of 7.00 and an economy rate of 4.30.
"Yes, Shami should have played in the XI a lot earlier. Look at the impact he has made.”
Team India is set to play their last group stage match against Netherlands on Sunday, November 12 at M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru.
