Mohammad Rizwan failed to convert his start against England at the 2023 World Cup, after he attempted to break Pakistan’s run-scoring shackles in Kolkata. Batting at number four, the dashing wicketkeeper-batsman made his way to the middle in just the third over of the innings.

In pursuit of a monumental 338-run task, Rizwan staged his side’s semi-recovery with crucial partnerships with Babar Azam and Saud Shakeel.

Arriving to the crease at a time when Pakistan team required runs at more than seven-an-over, Mohammad Rizwan batted cautiously alongside Babar Azam and Saud Shakeel owing to team’s top-order jitters within the powerplay. Having timed his way to 35* from 50 balls, Rizwan took a massive wipe across the line against Moeen Ali, only to have his stumps shattered by the English spinner.

The Pakistani batting veteran was deceived by Ali’s round-the-wicket angle, as Pakistan slumped further at 100-4 in their 338-run pursuit.

Earlier in the game, England amassed 337-9 in their 50 overs off the back of thunderous half-centuries from Jonny Bairstow, Joe Root and Ben Stokes. The English total ensured that the ‘Men in Green’ were left with a near-impossible task of qualifying for the World Cup 2023 semi-finals, considering they were required to hunt down their target in less than seven overs.

The match, marking the final league fixture for both sides in the tournament, is also a must-win one for defending champions England in their bid of securing a spot in the 2025 Champions Trophy.
