Just days after Rohit Sharma called time on his legendary Test career, Indian cricket found a new reason to celebrate its Hitman. On May 16, Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium gave its son a standing ovation by naming a stand after him.

Rahul Dravid Applauds Rohit Sharma As Wankhede Stand Named In His Honour

The newly christened Rohit Sharma Stand now sits proudly at Divecha Pavilion Level 3 and the love poured in from all corners. But one message stole the limelight, a warm, witty and heartfelt congratulatory video from Rahul Dravid, India’s former head coach and one of Rohit’s biggest admirers.

Dravid, known for his calm demeanour and classic straight bat, decided to go a little playful this time. His tribute to Rohit was packed with warmth and a cheeky dig or two.

“Hey Rohit, guess you have hit so many sixes into those stands that they had to name one after you. Congratulations!”

Rahul Dravid touched upon Rohit’s childhood dreams, his iconic moments at the Wankhede, and how the stand is a “just reward” for everything he’s done for both Mumbai and Indian cricket.

Dravid acknowledged how every kid in Mumbai dreams of just playing at Wankhede and Rohit went one better. He didn’t just light it up with the bat, he etched his name into the stadium forever.

“Not sure you dreamt about having a stand named after you… But now that it has come to that and you have one named after you, it's just reward for your contribution to both Mumbai and Indian cricket.”

What stood out even more was the respect and affection in Dravid’s words. He didn’t just congratulate Rohit, he celebrated him. And ended the video with a classic Dravid-style punchline:

“Looking forward to seeing a lot more sixes into the Rohit Sharma Stand… and when I’m short of tickets in Mumbai, now that you have the stand, I know who to contact.”

A Fitting Tribute After a Glorious Test Exit

The Wankhede honour comes right after Rohit retired from Tests, just months after stepping away from T20Is post India’s T20 World Cup 2024 win. But the event wasn’t just nostalgia, it was full-on celebration mode.

From Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis to Sharad Pawar and many more dignitaries, the who's who of Mumbai turned up. But nothing hit harder than Rohit standing there with his family, his parents, wife and brother soaking in the love.
