Former England pacer and coach David Llyod has cautioned Arshdeep Singh before Champions Trophy 2025. He advised the left-arm pacer to be wary of the challenges as transitioning from T20I to ODI format is not easy, especially in Jasprit Bumrah’s absence.
India faced a huge setback ahead of the Champions Trophy 2025 commencement as star pacer Jasprit Bumrah got ruled out due to a lower back injury. Harshit Rana has been named as replacement with Arshdeep Singh and Mohammad Shami leading the bowling unit.
But Arshdeep, even though he has the distinction of being a left-arm pacer, is in for a tough time. He has been mostly focused on the T20I format and has played only 9 ODIs for India.
David Llyod wary of Arshdeep Singh’s transition to the ODI format
Meanwhile, former England cricketer and coach David Lloyd has warned India that Jasprit Bumrah’s absence will be a major setback in Champions Trophy 2025.
“It’s a great opportunity for someone to come in, someone who wouldn’t make the team. But you can’t get away from the fact that he (Bumrah) is the best bowler in the world, and if he isn’t playing for you, you’ve got a problem," Llyod said to TalkSport Cricket.
With Arshdeep Singh likely to step into the gap, Lloyd feels the young left-arm seamer will have to adapt fast to 50-over cricket to make his mark.
“Massive difference – four overs to 10. If you’re the opposition, test him out; really get into him,” Lloyd said. “This is not T20 mate, this is not a little party, you’ve got to come back and come back again’, that will be something he won’t be used to,” he added.
Arshdeep, who recently became India’s highest wicket-taker in T20Is with 99 scalps, has limited experience in ODIs, having played only nine matches and picked up 14 wickets at an average of 23.00.
BCCI Secretary opens up on Bumrah’s absence from Champions Trophy
The BCCI shocked fans when it announced at midnight on February 11 that Jasprit Bumrah had been ruled out of the Champions Trophy 2025 due to an injury sustained during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25. Despite this, BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia is optimistic about India's chances at the top level.
Speaking to IANS, he backed Rohit Sharma’s squad and said:
"Everything is looking positive for Team India. Rohit and Virat are back in form, and the team’s spirit is at its highest level," Saikia said.
To replace Bumrah, India has picked Harshit Rana, while Mohammed Shami will spearhead the pace attack, with support from Hardik Pandya and Arshdeep Singh.
