Cricket fans were left in shock when, on the midnight of February 11, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced that star fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah would miss the Champions Trophy 2025. Initially named in the squad, Bumrah was later ruled out due to an injury he sustained during the fifth Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25. His absence is a big setback for India, but the team management remains optimistic.

However, BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia has backed the squad despite Bumrah’s exclusion, stating that India is still a strong contender for the title. He expressed confidence in the team led by Rohit Sharma, emphasizing that India's depth in talent will make up for the loss.

"We have picked the best team for the Champions Trophy, and I believe we will win the trophy. India has a strong bench strength, so I don’t think Bumrah’s absence will cause any major issues," Saikia told IANS.

To fill the void left by Bumrah, Harshit Rana has been named as his replacement. Meanwhile, experienced bowler Mohammed Shami will lead the pace attack alongside Hardik Pandya and Arshdeep Singh.

Rohit and Virat’s Form Boosts Team Confidence

Saikia also pointed out that the return to form of senior players Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli is a big positive for India. Both batters struggled in the Test series against Australia but regained their touch in the ODI series against England. India dominated England with a 3-0 ODI series whitewash, boosting team morale ahead of the Champions Trophy.

"Everything is looking positive for Team India. Rohit and Virat are back in form, and the team’s spirit is at its highest level," Saikia added.

The Champions Trophy will kick off on February 19, with Pakistan facing New Zealand in the opening match. India will begin their campaign on February 20, playing against Bangladesh at the Dubai International Stadium.
