It's another playoff berth call for the Iyer-Ponting duo. After having an outstanding stint with the Delhi Capitals, Ricky Ponting and Shreyas Iyer, the coach-captain duo, are taking the Punjab Kings to a different level.
After an outstanding group stage, Punjab Kings are all set to face the Royal Challengers Bengaluru in Qualifier 1. Ahead of the mega clash, Ricky Ponting said he doesn’t need to prove anything to anyone after his team’s success in IPL 2025.
Ponting Lets Success Do The Talking
After ending a long stint with the Delhi Capitals, Australian great Ricky Ponting joined the Punjab Kings this year. His fresh start has paid off brilliantly, leading PBKS straight into the playoffs. As a coach, he had an outstanding stint with DC as the team qualified for the playoffs three consecutive times in 2019, 2022, and 2021.
As he started his new stint, Punjab Kings qualified for the playoffs after 11 years. Before the team clashes off with RCB in the qualifier 1, Ponting looked back on his Delhi Capitals days, confident he has nothing left to prove at this level.
“I'm not sure if I had a point to prove. With the good squads that I had in DC, it was pretty evident to see where we made it with good players in that squad. We had three years in a row where we made the playoffs. One of those was into a final that Mumbai beat us in,” Ponting said to PTI.
PBKS Backs Ponting With Complete Control
In previous seasons, the Punjab Kings battled with their form. But this year, the entire scenario changed as they lit up the tournament with their outstanding performance and entered the playoffs as the table topper. Standing at this crucial stage, Ponting shared that the franchise gave him full freedom to build a strong core team.
“I made it pretty clear that when I accepted the head coach's job (with Punjab Kings) that I wanted to have pretty much full autonomy over the way that we go about the coaching staff and the way that we go about putting the strategy together with the auction, our scouts did a terrific job,” he added.
After a stellar group stage, the Punjab Kings are eyeing their maiden IPL trophy. As they are all set to face the Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the Qualifier 1, fans are aiming for a thrilling win.
