Australia’s veteran fast bowler Josh Hazlewood has firmly denied rumours that he, Pat Cummins, and Mitchell Starc are nearing the end of their Test careers. The trio, who have been the backbone of Australia's pace attack for over a decade, were rumoured to be considering retirement after the upcoming Ashes 2025 series.
At 34, Hazlewood has battled injuries in recent years, just like Cummins, who is currently dealing with a back issue.
Starc, meanwhile, recently announced his retirement from T20 internationals to focus on Tests and ODIs. He has his eyes set on the upcoming series against India, the IPL, and the 2027 ODI World Cup.
Josh Hazlewood Denies Retirement Rumours
While their age and fitness are closely watched, Josh Hazlewood believes there’s no immediate reason to worry about their future.
Speaking to SEN Radio, Hazlewood made it clear that all three bowlers (him, Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc) still love Test cricket and are not thinking of walking away anytime soon.
"I don't think we're in a position now to say anything, but I think you might sit back at the end and have a think about it. I think everyone still loves the format of Test cricket. There's plenty of Tests coming up in the next two years. There's another cycle of the World Test Championship so there's a lot of things still exciting about Test Cricket, not just the Ashes. I think we've still got a few more games left in us yet," Hazlewood said.
The deadly trio is committed to giving their absolute best in the upcoming Ashes series against England with no retirement concerns in sight. However, the skipper’s fitness will be closely monitored.
Cummins Down With Back Injury Ahead Of Ashes
Australia's Test captain, Pat Cummins, is battling a lumbar bone stress injury in his lower back, which has sidelined him from the upcoming white-ball series against New Zealand and India.
The injury, identified after he reported back soreness, has raised concerns about his availability for the Ashes series starting on November 21 in Perth.
Cummins, 32, is undergoing a rehabilitation programme that currently includes light gym work and avoiding intense physical activities like bowling and running.
