Star Indian batter Shreyas Iyer has revealed he turned down a prestigious invitation from his endorser, Nike, to attend the recent Wimbledon Championships. Despite the allure of the event, which attracted a host of Indian cricketing stars, the 30-year-old chose to decline the offer.

In a unique sport crossover facilitated by Nike, Shreyas Iyer later met Spanish tennis sensation Carlos Alcaraz in Barcelona, a day after the Wimbledon final. The meeting brought together two elite athletes from different disciplines under the shared banner of their famous sportswear brand.

Iyer Admits Declining Nike

Iyer, who usually flaunts his Nike shoe collections, admitted that he was invited to Wimbledon by Nike, but he refused to visit while also remarking on how the whole of the Indian cricket team attended the event.

"Nike also offered to take me to Wimbledon... but I decided to stay away. It looked like the whole of India was in London this year," Shreyas told GQ India.

Currently leading India A, Iyer was a key member of the Indian team that clinched the ICC Champions Trophy earlier this year, an experience he holds in the highest regard.

"Winning the ICC Champions Trophy for India was the best feeling ever. As we keep saying, you have to trust your preparations. When you prepare yourself in a certain manner, whatever happens on the ground is just a reflection of what you do off the field," Shreyas said.

Iyer had a brilliant run in the Champions Trophy with 243 runs in his bag from just 5 innings, Shreyas became the highest run-scorer for the team in the tournament. He also boasted an average of 48.60 while maintaining a strike rate of 79.41.
