The fourth Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) was a fierce contest, with Jasprit Bumrah emerging as the standout performer for India. The pacer delivered a masterclass, claiming nine crucial wickets across both innings. However, despite Bumrah’s tireless efforts to keep India in the game, the visitors fell short, suffering a heartbreaking defeat at the hands of Australia.
As the dust settled, Australian skipper Pat Cummins, who played a pivotal role in his team’s victory, had a pointed response when asked about empathizing with Bumrah’s valiant performance.
Cummins Dismisses Sympathy For Bumrah's Herculean Effort
Australian captain Pat Cummins showed little sympathy for Bumrah, who put in a phenomenal shift for his side. When asked if he felt any empathy for Bumrah at the post-match press conference, Cummins was pretty straightforward, as he replied:
“Empathy? Not too much,” with a bit of a smirk.
Bumrah really went above and beyond, picking up nine wickets in the match, with impressive spell figures of 28.4 overs in the first innings and 24.4 overs in the second. He ended the series with a remarkable 30 wickets at an average of 12.83, but Cummins seemed unbothered. However, Cummins did recognize Bumrah as India's key player.
“He is obviously a really good bowler in great form. He has been their most influential player,” though Cummins' tone suggested he wasn’t overly concerned.
Patty also shared his thoughts on performing in front of a record crowd at the MCG, acknowledging that it was a 'never-before' experience for the team, which made the victory even more special.
"It was one of the best test match I have been involved in. The crowd was huge and overall the win looked certain on the pitch. So yeah it was one of those great wins," Cummins added.
On his part, Cummins also had a standout performance at the MCG, claiming the Player of the Match award after scoring 90 runs and taking six wickets.
Men In Blue Desperate For SCG Win
While Day 4 of the Boxing Day Test was a good start for India to get back into the game, the Men in Blue lost the plot after Lunch on Day 5. Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul, and Virat Kohli's early dismissal set the tone of despair for India and the middle-order collapse sealed the inevitable defeat at the end of the day. With Australia now leading the series 2-1, the action shifts to Sydney, where India will be looking to level things up 2-2 in the final Test.
