India’s cricketing circuit continues to hunt for its next senior men’s head coach. Rahul Dravid, who was appointed to the role back in late-2021, is set to step down as India’s head coach following the conclusion of the 2024 T20 World Cup in June.

Ever since Dravid confirmed his decision of not extending his coaching contract with the BCCI, the names of former players like Gautam Gambhir, Ricky Ponting, Stephen Fleming and Justin Langer among others have been making rounds as India’s next potential head coach.

With BCCI zeroing in on an ideal candidate, former South African captain AB de Villiers has now given his take upon being offered a hypothetical possibility of becoming India’s coach sometime in the near future.

AB de Villiers says ‘never say never’ to coaching possibility

While speaking on News18, AB de Villiers hinted out a possibility of coaching Team India sometime in the near future.

“I absolutely have no idea. I do think I’ll enjoy coaching. I think there’s certain elements I won’t enjoy as much, which I will have to learn. But I think there are elements of a coaching job that I’ll enjoy a lot. Things that I’ve learned over the years, the maturity that I’ve got now at the age of 40, looking back, a lot of things look a lot clearer when I look back at my career. So those kinds of learnings could be valuable for some younger players, even some senior players.”

AB de Villiers, who is already familiar with a number of Indian players, including Virat Kohli through his past IPL commitment for the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), added that he might consider coaching the Indian team sometime in the near future.

“It’s not something that really appeals to me now. But as I said, never say never. Down the line, things might change.”

AB de Villiers announced his retirement from all forms of competitive cricket following the conclusion of the IPL 2021 season for the RCB.
