In a significant development, the current head coach of the Indian men's cricket team, Rahul Dravid has chosen not to extend his coaching tenure with the national team, despite requests from senior players to continue coaching the Test squad for another year.

Dravid has decided to move on, adhering to the policy of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), which mandates a single coach for all formats of the game.

He was unwilling to continue coaching beyond the ODI World Cup in 2023. However, with the T20 World Cup looming just seven to eight months later, he and his support staff received an extension.

Now, with the BCCI seeking a new Head Coach for Team India (Men), many assumed Dravid would remain in the position, especially after BCCI Secretary Jay Shah clarified that Dravid could reapply for the role.

However, several reports suggest that Dravid informed the BCCI of his decision not to apply even before the start of IPL 2024, expressing his desire to spend more time with his family.

While the door remains open for Dravid to apply for the coach’s role, the board is considering overseas candidates, with Stephen Fleming, Ricky Ponting, and Justin Langer reportedly in contention to succeed Dravid.

The last foreign coach to work with the Indian team was Duncan Fletcher. The next coach will serve until the end of 2027 on a 3 and half years contract.

Meanwhile, the current head of the National Cricket Academy (NCA), VVS Laxman was expected to apply for the top job. However, according to reports, he is also unlikely to do so.
